So when I’m travelling, I like to still be able to run. I just find it good for me and it beats spending a bunch of time in a gym or some other space. Besides, running while travelling can give you a great opportunity to explore and discover more parts of the city or area you’re travelling in. Being used to running while travelling, I thought I’d offer a little guide to it, because whilst it can seem easy enoguh, there are some important things that you might want to do before running whilst travelling. They’re only a few small things, but they can help maintain peace of mind when it comes to running and travelling
Research In Advance
The first thing I do before running whilst travelling is research the city and/or area I’m going to be staying in. I say ‘research’,but you needn’t do more than check a couple of websites, and there’s plenty out there. These searches can be really great at bringing you peace of mind when you’re in a new or unfamiliar area.
Spend a Day or So Getting Used to it.
When you’re away from home, domestically or internationally, there can be a lot of new information to take in when visiting a new place. If you’re staying for more than a single night, say three to five days or longer, then spending the first day or two to explore and familiarise yourself with the area can be really useful if you’re wanting to keep running whilst travelling.
Not running might seem counterintuitive to the whole subject at hand, but even if you aren’t running every day whilst travelling, you’ll likely be doing a lot of walking anyway. But the main takeaway is that you’ll have a firmer grasp of the place you’re visiting, which can be especially helpful if you’re in a densely packed area with lots of buildings. It’ll give you the chance to pick up on key landmarks and areas. I know that I’ve gotten confused and taken a wrong turn when I’m running whilst travelling, and it’s an easy mistake to make, so preparation is key.
Parks Are Your Friends.
Running whilst travelling can be difficult if you’re in a big city with a lot of new information to process. Whether you’re staying for one night or several weeks, an easy option for your route is to find a park.
These can be easily found through tools such as Google Maps. You can find yourself a nie route or tail via sites such as Alltrails. These can be easy to use and really helpful for finding an interesting route to run whilst travelling.
Keep it Short and Quick.
One final piece of advice for running whilst travelling is that it might b easier for you to have a shorter run, not necessarily a distance-heavy one if you’re travelling. With a lot of the stress that can come from travel and walking and exercise involved with exploring a new place, you may find yourself getting worn out very quickly if you’re also completing a lot of long runs. Besides, you’re travelling: try to enjoy it.
Do you have any tips or approaches to running while travelling? I’d love to hear them if you do! I’m hoping to travel in the next few weeks, so I’d love some new ideas for running whilst travelling
See you soon,
